Why the U.S. Navy Doesn’t Build Battleships Anymore

The U.S. Navy no longer builds battleships because their core operational concept has been obsolete for decades. The sinking of the Japanese battleship Yamato by carrier aircraft in 1945 signaled the end of an era where naval combat was decided by large guns at relatively close ranges. Aircraft carriers, and later long-range precision missiles, provided a far greater ability to strike effectively first, rendering the battleship's design irrelevant. While their military utility has vanished, battleships continue to hold a powerful symbolic and political value as icons of national strength, which explains why calls for their revival sometimes emerge in political discourse.
