UN votes to back Unrwa as US weighs sanctions

The United Nations General Assembly voted overwhelmingly to back an International Court of Justice (ICJ) advisory opinion that Israel must allow aid into Gaza through UN agencies, including the UN Relief and Works Agency (Unrwa). The resolution passed with 139 countries in favor, while 12, including the US and Israel, voted against it. This vote serves as a strong endorsement for Unrwa, which has faced Israeli accusations of harboring Hamas members and the threat of US sanctions. The ICJ had previously ruled that Israel's restrictions on aid to Gaza and the occupied West Bank are inconsistent with international law, rejecting Israel's arguments of military necessity.
