Turkey’s Drone Industry at a Strategic Crossroads

Turkey's combat drone industry is at a strategic crossroads, facing a choice between continuing its unconstrained global export strategy and integrating more deeply with the NATO defense ecosystem. The current dual-track approach, which includes selling drones with "no-strings-attached" to fragile and authoritarian states, is becoming unsustainable amid intensifying geopolitical polarization. The success of drones like the Bayraktar TB2 stems from their low cost, combat-proven effectiveness, and a permissive export policy that prioritizes strategic influence. This has created a paradox where Turkish drones support anti-Western regimes in Africa while also being used by U.S.-aligned nations to deter Russia and China elsewhere. The analysis concludes that deeper integration with NATO represents the more rational long-term strategic choice for Ankara, anchoring it within durable alliances despite potential commercial losses.
