Turkey-Syria defence deal covers training and weapons supply

Turkey and Syria have signed a security agreement to assist Damascus with military training, consultancy, and equipment procurement. This deal aims to help Syria restructure its armed forces and build a modern military following the fall of the Assad government. The agreement was partly prompted by Syria's request for help after recent Israeli strikes in Damascus and Sweida. While the pact facilitates cooperation and weapons supply, it currently stops short of allowing the deployment of Turkish troops to Syrian bases. The memorandum also establishes a framework for advising the Syrian army and combating threats like the Islamic State group.
