Trump administration to end legal protections for some Somalis in mid-March

The US Department of Homeland Security announced that temporary protected status (TPS) for Somali citizens will expire on March 17, urging them to "self-deport." The administration stated that conditions in Somalia have improved and that allowing Somalis to remain is contrary to US national interests. This decision follows the cancellation of TPS for other nationalities, including Venezuelans, Syrians, and Afghans. The policy change was announced amid President Trump's critical remarks against Somali immigrants and Representative Ilhan Omar.
