The Importance of the Raid of Nassau

In March 1776, the new Continental Navy and Marines launched their first amphibious operation, a raid on Nassau in the Bahamas, to seize desperately needed gunpowder for the revolution. The American force successfully captured the town and its forts, but the British governor, having been alerted, managed to ship most of the valuable gunpowder away just before the assault. This mixed result, combined with the commander's decision to disobey original orders, turned a tactical victory into a political failure that blunted the mission's strategic impact and led to a congressional hearing.
