The Danger of Vibe Patriotism in Defense Tech

Private market participation in the defense technology sector is increasingly being framed as a form of "service" comparable to that of uniformed military personnel. This comparison is fundamentally flawed, as civilian employees and investors retain the option to quit, a privilege not afforded to servicemembers who accept state-imposed obligations and risks. While this rhetoric helps companies with sales and talent acquisition, it promotes a "vibe patriotism" that blurs the critical distinction between contribution and sacrifice. Ultimately, this can lower the moral and social barriers to war by allowing influential civilians to associate with its gravity while remaining insulated from its true costs.
