Syrian Kurds seek constitutional recognition after rights decree

Syrian Kurdish political parties have cautiously welcomed a decree from the interim government recognizing their cultural and linguistic rights. The decree, issued by interim President Ahmad al-Sharaa, also restores citizenship to Kurds who lost it in a 1962 census and makes Newroz a national holiday. Despite this, Kurdish leaders from the PYD and the Kurdish National Council argue these symbolic steps are insufficient. They are demanding full constitutional recognition of their rights and a form of autonomy in northern Syria. The consensus among Kurdish groups is that these provisions must be legally guaranteed within a new, decentralized democratic constitution.
