Sweet Nothings: Rutte’s Trump-Whispering Is Counterproductive

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte's strategy for managing President Trump through excessive flattery and appeasement is seen as a counterproductive approach. While his predecessor, Jens Stoltenberg, also used praise, Rutte's method has been described as obsequious, crossing a line by prioritizing the president's ego above all else. This "Trump-whispering" has come at the expense of addressing urgent matters, such as the war in Ukraine and the fundamental need for NATO's "Europeanization."
