Spain pledges $175m to Unrwa by 2026

Spain has pledged to donate $175 million to the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) by 2026, aiming to keep the agency financially afloat following funding cuts from the United States. At a United Nations General Assembly event, Spain's Foreign Minister stated there is "no other alternative" to UNRWA and that his country would not remain indifferent to Palestinian suffering. UNRWA chief Philippe Lazzarini warned that without new funding to fill a $200 million gap, the agency would be forced to take drastic measures, potentially impacting staff and aid to refugees. The discussion also highlighted the collapsing humanitarian response in Gaza, with calls for a ceasefire and a significant increase in aid.
