Rapid unravelling of SDF removes 'main irritant' in US-Turkey ties

The rapid dismantling of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) by Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa's forces is removing a major point of tension in US-Turkey relations. The US-backed semi-autonomous Kurdish region, known as Rojava, has collapsed as Arab forces loyal to the new Damascus government have taken control of vast territories in northeastern Syria. Turkey has long viewed the SDF as an extension of the PKK, a group it considers a terrorist organization, making the US partnership with the SDF a significant irritant for the NATO ally. This shift in US policy, coinciding with Donald Trump's return to the presidency, signals a recognition of Turkey's security concerns and influence in the region.
