A study by the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (Unrwa) indicates that over 50,000 children under five in Gaza are suffering from acute malnutrition. This life-threatening condition, also known as wasting, is defined by a child being too thin for their height due to a severe lack of nutrients. The research, published in The Lancet, found that the prevalence of malnutrition directly correlates with periods of severe restrictions on humanitarian aid entering the territory. Researchers also observed that wasting among children declined during a six-week ceasefire when increased aid was permitted into Gaza.
