Israel to appoint new army lawyer after Palestinian prisoner rape scandal

The Israeli military is set to appoint a new advocate general after its top lawyer, Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi, resigned. Tomer-Yerushalmi admitted to leaking surveillance footage that purportedly showed soldiers gang-raping a Palestinian detainee at the Sde Teiman detention camp. The leak was reportedly done to counter pressure from far-right groups who were attacking the military's investigation into the assault. Following the resignation, lawyers for the five soldiers indicted for "severe abuse" are calling for the trial to be cancelled.
