The International Criminal Court has sentenced former Janjaweed commander Ali Muhammad Ali Abd-al-Rahman to 20 years for war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Sudan's Darfur region. Abd-al-Rahman, also known as Ali Kushayb, was found guilty on 27 counts of atrocities from 2003-2004, including murder, torture, and rape. This conviction marks a landmark case as he is the first militia leader to be convicted by the ICC for the Darfur conflict. The Janjaweed militia was a primary actor in the conflict, and its offshoot, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), is currently at war with the Sudanese army.
