Human Rights Watch calls for overturning 'politically motivated' convictions in Tunisia

Human Rights Watch has called on Tunisia's judiciary to overturn the convictions of 37 people accused of planning to destabilize the country. The rights group decried the case as a politically motivated crackdown on dissent, stating the charges are unfounded and not based on credible evidence. The defendants, including activists and political opponents, were sentenced to long prison terms in a process HRW says was marred by irregularities and lacked due process. Some of the detainees, such as opposition leader Jaouhar Ben Mbarek, have begun hunger strikes to protest their conditions.
