How Does the Iran War Affect China’s Energy Security?

Contrary to popular belief, China's energy security is not critically dependent on Iranian oil, as the nation is surprisingly 85% self-sufficient in its overall energy needs. Beijing has deliberately diversified its oil import sources and is rapidly electrifying its economy, with renewable sources now surpassing oil as the second-largest energy component. While coal remains the country's primary power source, oil is still irreplaceable for key industries like petrochemicals, shipping, and aviation. Therefore, while China can withstand a short-term supply shock from a conflict in the Middle East, a prolonged closure of the Strait of Hormuz would pose a serious test to its energy strategy.
