Gaza death toll was a third higher than official figures, says Lancet study

A study in The Lancet Global Health journal estimates that the number of violent deaths in Gaza during the first 16 months of Israel's war exceeded 75,000. This figure is approximately 35 percent higher than the official numbers from the Palestinian health ministry for the same period ending January 5, 2025. The research, based on a representative household survey, also found that the reported proportion of women, children, and elderly people killed was accurate. The study's authors suggest there have also been a substantial number of non-violent deaths caused indirectly by the conflict, such as from malnutrition and untreated disease.
