The English High Court has ordered Saudi Arabia to pay over £3 million in compensation to Ghanem al-Masarir, a London-based dissident. A judge ruled the kingdom was responsible for infecting his phone with Pegasus spyware and directing a physical attack against him in London in 2018. The court concluded that Saudi authorities used the notorious spyware, acquired from the Israeli NSO Group, to surveil the human rights activist due to his public criticism of the government. This ruling compensates Masarir for psychiatric harm and is seen as a victory for human rights against state-sponsored intimidation.
