Democratic senators call for US to recognise a Palestinian state

A group of Democratic senators is calling for the United States to recognize a Palestinian state. Led by Senator Jeff Merkley of Oregon, the group introduced a nonbinding resolution for the US to formally recognize a "demilitarised Palestinian state." This is the first time such a proposal has been made in the US Senate. Merkley stated that recognition is a practical step and the right thing to do to build a future of freedom, dignity, and security for both Palestinians and Israelis.
