Defending Against the Next Bioweapon: the mRNA Imperative

Modern synthetic biology and AI have created a new landscape where biological weapons can be developed with terrifying speed. Messenger RNA (mRNA) technology represents a crucial countermeasure, allowing for the rapid design of defenses once a pathogen's genetic sequence is known. Despite its proven success during the COVID-19 pandemic, recent U.S. government funding cuts risk ceding this strategic advantage. To maintain national security and deter adversaries, the Pentagon should prioritize mRNA biodefense manufacturing and Congress should restore research funding before competitors close the technological gap.
