The United Nations is set to reimpose sweeping sanctions on Iran's nuclear program after a last-minute effort by China and Russia to delay the measure failed in the Security Council. The so-called "snapback" sanctions, which target Iran's oil and banking sectors, were originally lifted under the 2015 JCPOA nuclear deal. European powers had been negotiating with Iran to avert the sanctions, seeking full access for International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors. In response, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that IAEA inspectors were currently in Iran and called the impending reimposition of sanctions "legally void."
